Extensions for Assignments and Attendance Flexibility

Assignment Extensions:

An assignment accommodation is granted for a student with a disability that may impact their ability to complete assignments within a strict time frame.

This accommodation is a request for some flexibility on assignment due dates so that the student is not penalized for late submissions due to exacerbations of their condition, which in some cases are unpredictable and inevitable despite ongoing health and time management practices.

The scope of reasonable flexibility will depend on the nature and severity of the functional limitations associated with the student’s disability experience, the type of assignment, whether it is foundational work for future learning, and/or a part of group projects etc.  Students who are eligible for this accommodation are responsible for completing all coursework within the established time frame.

Students can either reach out directly to their professor, or connect with their Disability Adviser for assistance to request an assignment extension. Professors are encouraged to consult with the Disability Adviser to determine reasonability and gauge appropriate flexibility within the specific context of their course, as needed.

Flexibility with Attendance:

An accommodation for flexibility with attendance is generally granted for a student who has a documented disability that may impact their ability to attend class.  This accommodation is a request for flexibility within the professor’s attendance policy so that the student is not disproportionately penalized for exacerbations in their condition, which in some cases are unpredictable and inevitable despite ongoing health and time management practices.

The scope of attendance flexibility will depend on the nature and severity of the functional limitations associated with the student’s disability experience, the nature of the class, and whether class participation is an essential element of the course.  Students who are eligible for this accommodation are responsible for completing all coursework, and consulting with professors to establish an acceptable number of absences allowed for the entire course.

Students can either reach out directly to their professor, or connect with their Disability Adviser for assistance to discuss flexibility with a course attendance policy.  Professors are encouraged to consult with the Disability Adviser to determine reasonability and gauge appropriate flexibility within the specific context of their course, as needed.

Here is a sample email for students to use as a reference to initiate the conversation a professor for assignment extensions, and flexibility with attendance:

Dear Professor ______,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing to share my OAE accommodation letter with you, and to discuss the accommodations outlined in it, including flexibility for class attendance, and/or assignment extensions.

While I understand that the fundamental requirements of your course cannot be altered, I wanted to proactively discuss how many absences I would be allowed due to the sometimes-unpredictable nature of my disability. Generally speaking, 1 or 2 days beyond the absence policy listed in our syllabus would be adequate to meet my needs in the event that exacerbations occur.

Furthermore, should assignment extensions be needed on any homework, or problem sets I will contact you prior to the assignment due date to initiate my request. Typically, 1-3 days will suffice. In the event it is needed, I will maintain coordination of all extension requests and provide as timely notice as possible.

Please let me know if you have any questions, or concerns. I have also cc’d my Disability Adviser on this message for reference.

Sincerely,
